SCIENCE

Wheat Week!!

.Wheat week was filled with fun, interactive science lessons to teach students about water, soil, watersheds, energy and systems. Below, you can see some students separating the awns from the kernels.

Land and Water

We wrapped up our Land and Water unit. Students investigated the interactions between land and water. Using a stream table as their model, they observed how runoff causes stream formation; how groundwater forms; how soil is eroded, transported, and deposited; and how water shapes land. Each group followed the “Engineering Design Model” as they created a dam in their stream tables to keep the city from flooding. They asked questions, made a plan, observed, and then improved their plan. Some cities were protected and others…not so much. But either way, there was a lot of hands-on cooperative learning and knowledge building.

LITERACY

Book Clubs

We’ve recently started Book Clubs. Students are reading the same books in groups of 3 or 4. In these groups, your kiddos are reading, talking, making decisions and learning how to make sure that each person has a voice during their discussions.

Debates

I was so impressed with these Gems!! They learned how to debate differing viewpoints on a provocative question about a book they had all read. In the debates, each team of two,  supported their side with evidence to persuade the other team.

Students often share their thinking with the class. This is Josie sharing a journal entry from her reading log.

Students continue to work on their Realistic Fiction stories. Some are currently in the publishing stage.

ART DAY

What a fun day! Photography took place in my classroom. I was able to sneak out a few times to capture other activities going on in other classroom.
